UK and NATO work together on cyber defence

A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between the UK and NATO which is designed to deepen their cyber defence cooperation.

The MOU will further cyber defence and cooperation between the cyber defence authorities of NATO and the UK. Interoperability, information sharing and assistance will be enhanced through the agreement, while incident prevention, resilience and response capabilities will be improved.

The signing was held at a ceremony at NATO Headquarters with Ambassador Sorin Ducaru, Assistant Secretary General in his capacity as Chairman of the Cyber Defence Management Board (CDMB), co-signed with Paul Chichester, Director of Operations at the National Cyber Security Centre.

Speaking at the event, Mr Chichester stated: “To meet the challenges of cyber threats, the UK Government launched a five year National Cyber Security Strategy (NCSS) in November last year, supported by £1.9billion of investment. Part of this includes the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), which will provide a single, central body for cyber security at a national level. In line with our Cyber Defence Pledge and Strategic Defence and Security Review commitments, NCSC will use its intelligence capabilities and world-class technical insights to work with NATO and our allies to better protect our networks.”
