The UK and France have moved their defence collaboration further into new territory, with a new tech agreement.
The new agreement will enable the next phase of the Unmanned Combat Air System (UCAS) programme, whilst further supporting Ajax and Warrior armoured vehicles.
The next phase of the Demonstration Programme will see two full-scale versatile and world-class UCAS demonstrators operational by 2025, and it is hoped that these will serve as the basis for a future operational capability.
Significant progress has been made on a number of capabilities due to the collaboration between the two countries, with the CT Cannon one of the weapons developed. Smaller and lighter than many weapons of similar calibre, the cylindrical CT ammunition is unique, taking up a lot less space than similar systems and is easier to select and load for automatic handling systems.
This has led to a contract to cover technical support for three years with CTA International, with the Case Telescoped Cannon (CTC) integrated onto the British Army’s new multi-role AJAX armoured vehicle and the Warrior infantry fighting, while France is integrating it onto the Jaguar armoured vehicle.
On signing the agreement with her French Counterpart, Minister for Defence Procurement Harriett Baldwin MP said: “In an uncertain world, working with international partners and allies is more important than ever and I am delighted that our teams, working with British and French industry partners, are making good progress on these ambitious bilateral programmes.
“With a rising Defence budget, and a £178Bn equipment plan, our commitment to innovation and collaboration will deliver a safer and more prosperous Britain.”
