Work on first Type 26 frigate will start next summer

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon has announced that the first steel will be cut on the Navy’s next-generation frigates next summer.

During a visit to BAE’s Govan shipbuilding yard, the Defence Secretary confirmed that work on the hull of the first of eight Type 26 Global Combat Ships will begin next summer.

Work will be undertaken at the Clyde dockyard, beginning the programme to replace the Type 23 frigates, the oldest of which in HMS Argyll at 27. Numerous jobs will be secured during the construction, including a nationwide supply and support chain. More than 24 companies are involved so far with air weapons handling systems, gas turbines, and electric propulsion motor and drive systems sourced.

The Type 26 programme has seen the design completed with parts and systems for the first three warships acquired, committing some £2Bn to the programme to date.

BAE is under contract to manufacture the Maritime Indirect Fire System, including its 5in Mk 45 gun.

Two further announcements were made by Mr Fallon, with MBDA receiving a £100M contract to deliver the Sea Ceptor air defence missile; which is currently being fitted to Type 23 as a replacement for the veteran Seawolf and will be the first line of defence for Type 26s against air attack.

While BAE are finalising a contract for the two extra Offshore Patrol Vessels in addition to HM Ships Forth, Medway and Trent.
