1,000 jobs saved across Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Devon as Navantia UK agrees to acquire Harland & Wolff’s four shipyards.

In a landmark commercial deal, Navantia UK has agreed to purchase all four Harland & Wolff shipyards, securing the future of UK shipbuilding and safeguarding 1,000 skilled jobs across the nation. This agreement, subject to regulatory approval, ensures the continuation of shipbuilding operations in Belfast (Northern Ireland), Arnish and Methil (Scotland), and Appledore (Devon).

The deal protects existing workers’ terms and conditions and guarantees the delivery of the Ministry of Defence’s Fleet Solid Support (FSS) Programme. This vital contract involves building three Royal Navy support ships to transport munitions, spares, and supplies to the UK’s aircraft carriers, ensuring the operational strength of the Carrier Strike Group.

Bolstering UK Shipbuilding and Defence

This agreement marks a significant investment into the UK’s defence and industrial base, reinforcing sovereign shipbuilding capabilities while delivering economic benefits to coastal communities. The FSS Programme is crucial to maintaining the Royal Navy’s global reach and military readiness.

Business & Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds welcomed the deal, saying: “This is a major vote of confidence in the UK from Navantia. It secures 1,000 skilled jobs, supports economic growth, and guarantees our sovereign shipbuilding capabilities. National security underpins our Plan for Change – enabling us to raise living standards with productive, high-quality jobs.”

Defence Secretary John Healey added: “This agreement keeps vital defence manufacturing in the UK, protects skilled jobs, and strengthens the partnerships that will drive future growth. It bolsters our ability to support Royal Navy operations and delivers a significant boost to coastal communities.”

Future Opportunities for Growth

Beyond the FSS Programme, the deal positions Harland & Wolff’s shipyards for future naval work, creating new job opportunities and cementing the UK’s role as a global leader in defence manufacturing.

The UK Government has collaborated closely with Navantia to amend the FSS contract on commercial terms, ensuring all three ships are built domestically. The agreement highlights a steadfast commitment to supporting the shipbuilding industry, fostering economic growth, and advancing national security objectives.

This strategic partnership reinforces the UK’s role as a leader in defence innovation and manufacturing while delivering long-term benefits for workers, communities, and the Royal Navy’s operational strength.
