4. Description: The Awarding Authority have a £20,000 commission available for a VCSE organisation to run face-to-face health and wellbeing support programmes for families across the Specified District.
The Wakefield Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) Wakefield District Annual Report 2024: Children provides comprehensive information and data, outlining the health and wellbeing needs of the children’s population of Wakefield District. From this report, we know that:
Less than half of children aged 5-16 met the government recommendations for physical activity in 2022-23
52% of 11-12 year olds from the most deprived areas eat fruit and veg, compared to 80% in the least deprived areas
The 2024 JSNA for Adults tells us that:
In 2021-22, 76% of adults were living with overweight (including obesity) in Wakefield, significantly higher than the national level of 64% and is likely to see a further increase
Wakefield Council’s Wellbeing team deliver a referral service that support families to make dietary and lifestyle changes to improve their overall health and wellbeing. After a switch to online/digital support during/post Covid there has been an influx of requests for face-to-face support around family health and wellbeing for those with children living with overweight and obesity.
The Wellbeing Team recognise the importance of supporting VCSE organisations within the community and the successful outcomes they can achieve so they are looking for an organisation to support with this work.
Project Overview
The successful organisation must be able to provide face to face advice around health and wellbeing for families in the form of group based sessions and activities. Group sessions should be suitable and inclusive for both adults and children alike, with the aim of promoting healthier eating habits, increasing physical activity levels, improving confidence and self-esteem, and supporting long term behaviour changes.
We are looking for an organisation that can provide a fresh, unique approach to family wellbeing programmes alongside the delivery of some core programme components. The successful organisation will be expected to:
Design, advertise and recruit participants to group based programmes lasting for a minimum of 6 weeks with a minimum of one 60 minute session each week
Deliver sessions throughout the district dependent on need, locations to be considered are Hemsworth, Knottingley and Pontefract South
Deliver a minimum of four programmes between October 2024 and October 2025
Focus on recruiting and enrolling families who have children between 5-11 years old
Work closely with other partners to ensure that families who access the services have appropriate advice and information to access community support

This fund will be distributed through Wakefield District’s Third Sector Framework. The Framework is a fair, open and transparent way of allocating funding to locally rooted Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) organisations in Wakefield District.
