Viasat has been awarded a US Department of Defense (DoD) indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract worth a maximum of $998 million for the production, retrofits, development & sustainment of the MIDS Joint Tactical Radio System (MIDS JTRS) terminals.
MIDS JTRS is a four-channel software-programmable radio that delivers Link 16 and TACAN (Tactical Air Navigation) functionality, as well as three channels for future growth. The terminals are used to connect military aircraft, ships and ground forces so they can exchange tactical information in near real-time, securely and without risk of being jammed by enemy forces.
They have also been designed to be backward-compatible with legacy communications systems, so that forces can guarantee interoperability when working with older equipment or with allies. The contract itself covers purchases for the US Navy, US Air Force, and NATO allies.
Currently, there are three variants of MIDS JTRS terminals: the Concurrent Multi-Netting-4, the Tactical Targeting Network Technology and the F-22 variant. Work will be performed in Carlsbad, California, and these terminals will continue to be procured, sustained and updated for future growth, including JTRS advanced networking waveforms such as: multifunction advanced data link, intra-flight data link and other advanced networking waveforms.
Work is expected to be complete by May 2025.
