DASA will host an event exploring the latest in protective materials to be attended by Armed Forces and government representatives.
The Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) will host an interactive event in December exploring protective materials that can offer more endurance and reduced cost. Representatives from industry, government, and the armed forces are expected to be in attendance to see how they could benefit from the latest in material innovations.
Materials to be displayed at the event are designed to be high-performing, robust, and lightweight, with a more cost-effective manufacturing process. The event will explore how they can be used to protect personnel, vehicles, and sensors.
The innovations are expected to include:
- The control of reflection from transparencies
- Protection for sensors
- Laminated glazing
- Laminated windows for logistic and support vehicles
- Public order protection
- Protection from explosive ordnance.
The innovation and capability exploitation day, hosted alongside the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) Materials for Strategic Advantage Programme, will take place in Hampshire on 17 December 2019. You can register your interest in attending by visiting the government website.
The Materials for Strategic Advantage programme looked for materials to improve survivability, efficiency, and mobility. Future possibilities include reducing the weight carried by personnel and developing advanced camouflage materials.
Working with allies, the programme ensures that advanced new materials, including graphene, metamaterials and synthetic biology, are identified and developed in time to future-proof next-generation defence equipment. It also develops tools, methods and models for assessing the structural integrity of components.
Key activities outlined by the competition include:
- Establish the capability to identify and assess future, novel and emerging threats.
- Analyse and assess the potential impact of emerging technologies on UK capabilities.
- Develop novel disruption concepts and techniques.
