British defence personnel from the Army, Navy, and RAF, have completed a training exercise with the Vietnamese People’s Army.

The UN’s Peace Keeping Operation (PKO) involved British defence personnel working with the Vietnamese People’s Army (VPA) on a Tactical Training Exercise/Field Training Exercise (TTX/FTX) in Hanoi. The exercise took place at the 301 Infantry Division in Hanoi and also included US and Australian soldiers.

British troops included medical experts who helped train Vietnamese personnel from Military Hospital 103 and Military Medical University ahead of their deployment with the UN in South Sudan. The next phase of the training will involve a recreation of the Level 2 hospital they will be deployed to in Bentiu.

Group Captain David Houghton, the UK Defence Attache, said: “The professionalism and dedication of the VPA personnel currently deployed to Bentiu has been clear to all the nations who form part of UNMISS.”

“The current TTX/FTX will ensure that the personnel from Military Hospital 103 and the Military Medical University who will deploy to Bentiu in October 2019 will be fully-prepared to continue the excellent work that is currently being carried out by Military Hospital 175 personnel.”

The training began with a table-top exercise which allowed VPA personnel to assess potential issues they may face when deployed in South Sudan and possible ways of tackling them. The VPA medical staff will be deployed to Sudan in October of this year as part of the UN’s ongoing PKO missions with Vietman.
