According to the Department for International Trade (DIT): “The Defence & Security Organisation (DSO) was established by the government of the day in 1966 to help industry maximise overseas sales in the military market.

“Since then, via a myriad of changes and the adoption of the security sector, it thrives as a key component of the new Department for International Trade, with a mission to help UK-based companies – large, medium and small – achieve export success.”

Exporting new ideas and products can be an uphill struggle however, especially for a small or medium-sized enterprise with little overseas experience. Where do you begin when bringing your innovations to a potential new market? Fortunately, DIT DSO is on-hand to lend its expertise.

“DIT DSO has a team dedicated to advising and supporting UK SMEs in their efforts to win overseas business in the defence and security markets,” say the Department for International Trade. “An integral part of the DIT DSO events team, the Small Business Unit (SBU) provides online support and services via the webpages at www.gov.uk/dit-dso.

“Additionally the SBU offers advice, information and support to SMEs on a one-to-one basis or as part of a wider project as appropriate. Its events and activities programme for SMEs range from first line support to the events team at major UK shows, through to smaller seminars and networking opportunities, organised either in conjunction with national and regional trade associations and industry sector clusters or as stand-alone occasions.”

The SBU is currently engaging with over 2,000 UK SMEs, with many more opportunities available to the wider supply chain.
