The US Department of Defense (DoD) has contracted Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) to supply state-of-the-art supercomputers as part of its hugely ambitious High Performance Computing Modernization Program.DPRTE 2018

In order to accelerate development and acquisition of advanced national security capabilities, the technology specialist will provide HPE SGI 8600 systems and services to the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) DoD Supercomputing Resource Center (DSRC) and Navy DSRC at a cost of $57 million.

Four HPE SGI 8600 systems are to be based in the AFRL DSRC at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in support of hypersonics and the computational modelling of current and advanced air, naval and ground weapon systems and platforms. A further three systems will be installed at the Navy DSRC to explore advanced weapons capabilities and provide improved reliability for the Navy’s global weather modelling requirements.

“In our data-driven world, supercomputing is increasingly becoming a key to stay ahead of competition – this applies to national defence just as to commercial enterprises,” said Bill Mannel, Vice President and General Manager at Hewlett Packard Enterprise.

“The DoD’s continuous investment in supercomputing innovation is a clear testament to this development and an important contribution to US national security. HPE has been a strategic partner with the HPCMP for two decades, and we are proud that the DoD now significantly extends this partnership, acknowledging HPE’s sustained leadership in high performance computing.”

In addition to the supercomputers themselves, HPE will also provide five years of 24/7 system support, including on-site system administration and applications support personnel.

The US Department of Defense will run one of five Knowledge Transfer Zones at Defence Procurement, Research, Technology & Exportability (DPRTE) 2018, which takes place at Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena on 27 March.

Don’t miss out on this fantastic chance to attend, sponsor or exhibit at DPRTE 2018. Book now at www.dprte.co.uk/book-now.
