The UK’s defence space capabilities are set for a major boost with the development of Borealis, an advanced command, control, and data processing system designed to enhance space monitoring and satellite protection. The £65M contract, awarded to CGI UK, will support around 100 skilled jobs across Leatherhead, Reading, and Bristol, reinforcing the UK’s status as a leader in defence space technology.
Strengthening UK Space Command
Borealis will provide the UK Space Command and the National Space Operations Centre (NSpOC) with cutting-edge software to process and analyse data from multiple sources more efficiently. This will give the UK military a clearer picture of space activity, helping commanders make informed decisions to safeguard satellites essential to national security, communications, and climate monitoring.
Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry, Maria Eagle MP, highlighted the significance of the deal: “This new system enhances the protection of our satellite technology while creating highly skilled jobs at home. It’s a key step in delivering our Defence Industrial Strategy and driving forward the Government’s Plan for Change.”
A Game-Changer for Space Security
Borealis will offer unmatched Space Domain Awareness (SDA), helping the UK track space weather, satellites, and debris, and protect critical space assets. Its integrated command-and-control system will ensure real-time decision-making across different security levels, benefiting both UK operations and allied partnerships.
Major General Paul Tedman, Commander of UK Space Command, emphasized the growing challenges in space: “Space is becoming increasingly contested and congested. Borealis will enhance our ability to monitor and safeguard our assets, as well as those of our allies.”
Industry Collaboration for Cutting-Edge Innovation
The contract will see CGI UK work alongside a network of specialist partners to deliver a world-class space monitoring system.
Neil Timms, Senior VP of Space, Defence & Intelligence at CGI, stated: “Borealis marks a strategic step towards a more integrated UK space data architecture, with the National Space Operations Centre at its heart.”
As global threats to satellite infrastructure increase, Borealis will play a vital role in ensuring national security, economic stability, and military resilience. This investment underscores the UK’s commitment to leading in space defence technology, while also creating high-tech jobs and supporting the UK’s defence industry.
