Scottish small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are playing a crucial role in the UK’s Defence Industrial Strategy, as Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry, Maria Eagle MP, visited Babcock’s Rosyth shipyard—the hub of Royal Navy Type 31 frigate production.

The visit included a roundtable discussion with Scottish SMEs, highlighting opportunities for local businesses in the defence sector and reinforcing the government’s commitment to building a resilient, UK-wide supply chain. With the Defence Industrial Strategy consultation open until the end of February, the initiative aims to accelerate investment, innovation, and job creation across the industry.

Shipbuilding investment boosts Scotland’s economy

  • £200M investment in Rosyth shipbuilding facilities
  • 2,500 skilled jobs sustained across Scotland
  • Simultaneous construction of two Type 31 frigates in state-of-the-art assembly hall

The Type 31 programme, managed by Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S), is a cornerstone of the UK Government’s Plan for Change, ensuring that defence contracts not only strengthen national security but also boost local economies and create high-quality jobs.

Maria Eagle MP, Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry: Rosyth is home to a world-class shipbuilding programme that enhances national security while supporting thousands of Scottish jobs and SMEs. This Government is working at pace with industry partners to develop a new Defence Industrial Strategy that will drive growth and innovation across the UK.”

Expanding opportunities for SME Defence Suppliers

Babcock’s Arrowhead 140 design, the basis for the Type 31 frigate, has already secured export contracts with Poland and Indonesia, with further global interest in UK shipbuilding capabilities. As the UK strengthens its naval presence, defence SMEs have growing opportunities to integrate into the supply chain, from advanced manufacturing to specialist components and services.

Defence Supply Chain Outlook

🔹 Ongoing Type 31 construction at Rosyth ensures sustained activity for SME suppliers
🔹 International exports create new supply chain opportunities beyond the UK
🔹 Government collaboration with industry will shape a more integrated and resilient defence sector

For SME defence suppliers, the Type 31 programme underscores the strategic importance of UK shipbuilding and the potential for long-term partnerships in the defence supply chain.
