Construction has officially commenced on a new solar array at Weeton Barracks, Lancashire, as part of the British Army’s ongoing efforts to enhance energy resilience and sustainability across its estate. The installation will generate 648 MWh per year, supplying over one-third of the site’s energy needs and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Project Prometheus: Scaling Up Renewable Energy Across the Army Estate

Funded under the British Army’s Project Prometheus, the initiative is part of a wider strategy to expand renewable energy capacity across military sites. The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) has contracted Mitie & Custom Solar to deliver the project, which will see 1,638 solar panels installed over a 3,600m² area—formerly home to aircraft hangars.

The system is expected to drive significant cost savings for the taxpayer while advancing the UK military’s sustainability and energy security objectives.

Industry & Military Leaders on the Solar Initiative

Lt Col Jamie Walkworth RE, Army Sustainability Team: “This project enhances the Army’s energy resilience and operational capability while safeguarding the environment where our personnel live, work, and train.”

Maj Peter Reid, 1 LANCS Quartermaster: “The solar farm will not only reduce our carbon footprint but also support local wildlife and serve as an educational platform for the community.”

Gary Sucharewycz, Sales Director, Custom Solar (Mitie): “This project strengthens our long-standing partnership with DIO as we work together to decarbonise the Army estate and create high-performing infrastructure for military personnel.”

Impact on the Defence Supply Chain

The success of Project Prometheus signals growing opportunities for defence contractors, renewable energy specialists, and infrastructure suppliers. As the UK military continues its net-zero journey, partnerships across the defence supply chain will be critical in delivering sustainable, high-performance energy solutions for the armed forces.
