UK Defence operations will be bolstered by a new £476M contract with Foreland Shipping Limited (FSL), ensuring the seamless transport of essential military supplies and sustaining 150 skilled UK jobs.
The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has awarded a seven-year strategic sealift contract to UK-based FSL, reinforcing the nation’s ability to meet global operational demands while prioritising British industry. The agreement highlights the Government’s commitment to strengthening national security, supporting UK jobs, and driving economic growth under the Defence Industrial Strategy.
Under the contract, FSL will provide four roll-on roll-off vessels, enabling the transport of critical military equipment and supplies, including armoured vehicles, medical provisions, and complex weapons. These vessels, operated by a unique category of UK reservists, will ensure the Armed Forces can respond rapidly to emerging threats and sustain critical operations worldwide.
Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry, Maria Eagle MP, emphasised the importance of this investment: “Strategic sealift underpins our ability to project global reach, respond to threats, and sustain operations. This contract secures jobs, supports economic growth, and strengthens our national security, reflecting our commitment to investing in the UK defence industry.”
The contract safeguards approximately 150 skilled jobs within FSL’s UK workforce, 97% of whom are sponsored reserves. These reservists, who are part of the civilian workforce, can be called upon to support military operations during crises.
This strategic capability not only protects UK jobs but also ensures the MOD retains experienced personnel crucial for maintaining operational readiness.
Chairman of Foreland Shipping Limited, Major General (retired) Ian Copeland CB, said: “We take great pride in delivering strategic sealift for the MOD. This extension will allow us to continue providing this vital capability, thanks to the dedication of our crew members and our close collaboration with Defence Supply Chain Operations and Movements.”
Strategic sealift remains central to the UK’s NATO commitments, particularly under the New Force Model, ensuring the rapid deployment of forces and supplies. The capability has supported decades of global military operations, including over 30 recent sailings to aid Ukraine, transporting more than 23,000 tonnes of equipment, including significant ammunition outloads.
FSL vessels have also played a critical role in UK-led exercises, such as the Joint Expeditionary Force’s Exercise Joint Protector in Latvia, demonstrating the UK’s ability to deploy and recover military assets rapidly in the Atlantic region.
Head of MOD Defence Supply Chain Operations and Movements, Commodore Karen Rees, highlighted the importance of maintaining this capability:
“Strategic sealift is essential to operational readiness and our ability to respond to global crises. This contract ensures we meet immediate needs and remain prepared for future challenges in an increasingly volatile world.”
The contract aligns with the Government’s Plan for Change, fostering economic growth through productive, skilled jobs while enhancing the UK’s sovereign defence capabilities. The Defence Industrial Strategy prioritises UK-based firms for investment, ensuring the defence sector contributes to raising living standards and securing national security.
This new agreement with FSL cements the UK’s position as a global leader in defence logistics and supply chain resilience, enabling the Armed Forces to meet current operational demands while preparing for future challenges.
