Fincantieri has announced it has been awarded the contract for the construction of the fourth Next Generation Submarine (NFS) for the Italian Navy.
The new submarine, valued at approximately 500 million euros, includes comprehensive Integrated Logistic Support and In-Service Support, marking a crucial step forward in the U212NFS program.
The signature also activates all other options that complete the maintenance support for the submarines already contracted.
Fincantieri additionally celebrated the commencement of work on the third NFS unit with a steel-cutting ceremony, with the Director of Naval Armament’s, Vice Admiral Giuseppe Abbamonte, also in attendance.
This project will integrate a pioneering lithium battery energy storage system, replacing the traditional lead-based system, significantly enhancing the submarine’s submerged autonomy. The U212NFS submarines, featuring substantial design advancements developed exclusively by Fincantieri, will fulfill the Italian Navy’s surveillance and control needs in increasingly complex underwater operational scenarios.
Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri, commented: “We are proud to announce this further step forward in Fincantieri’s growth in the defense sector and especially in relation to innovation in the underwater domain. This project contributes to expanding our presence in the underwater sphere, a strategic area where the major challenges of the geopolitical balances and technological innovation of the future will play out.”
