In the first of a three-part series presented by DCI and DPRTE, the webinar – Inside Track: New Opportunities from the Integrated Defence Review – the webinar explored some of the key highlights from the strategies with an initial focus on the new Defence and Security Industrial Strategy; what its changes to procurement processes means for businesses and how it will enable more opportunities for British suppliers to secure opportunities in the defence marketplace.
The Integrated Defence Review is the biggest shake up of the UK’s foreign policy and national security approach since the end of the Cold War.
With a planned spend of more than £210 billion on equipment programmes alone over the next decade, the changes are being backed by huge investment and fast-paced delivery. That means more opportunities to engage within the defence supply chain and be part of a UK success story.
Guesting on Part One was former MOD Commercial Director Les Mosco.
Mr Mosco emphasised that DSIS was the vital piece of the jigsaw for the defence supply chain in terms of the strategies as the Ministry of Defence looks to enhance its relationship with industry.
He also explained about how DSIS represents a decisive move away from ‘global competition by default’ towards UK supply and less competitive tendering – meaning greater opportunity for the UK defence supply chain.
Speaking on the webinar, he said: “One of the things that comes through quite clearly in the document is a much stronger ‘Buy British’. There is a much greater emphasis on onshore manufacturing and UK-based in-service support.
“The MOD will reserve more of the supply chain for UK suppliers, meaning there will be more UK sub-componentry even in things bought internationally.”
Mr Mosco also expects the MOD to make further strides in strengthening its relationship with SMEs as it looks to build and refresh its SME Action Plan.
He commented: “It is absolutely clear that the MOD is intent on building up a stronger relationship and more business into the SME supply chain – and that can only be a positive thing.”
The MOD currently has a target of 25% of all Departmental spend by value with industry to go to SMEs by 2022.
