Official DPRTE 2021 event partner, the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) has awarded CGI a contract to continue to develop an Artificial Intelligence (AI) network for the second phase of Intelligent Ship project.

This project aims to understand the potential for AI to revolutionise military decision-making, mission planning and automation as part of a human-machine team. The contract was awarded through a competition run by Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA).

CGI will further develop the Intelligent Ship AI Network it created during phase 1 of the Intelligent Ship competition. The AI network will bring together trained AI applications from CGI and other providers working with DASA to create a demonstrator that Dstl will employ to improve understanding of how human-machine teams can work together collaboratively to increase efficiency and effectiveness in military decision-making. CGI will lead the integration of the AI agents and delivery of the Intelligent Ship demonstration.

Julia Tagg, Dstl Project Technical Authority, said: “The Intelligent Ship project aims to demonstrate ways of bringing together multiple AI applications to make collective decisions, with and without human operator judgement.

“We hope that the use of AI in the future will lead to timely, more informed and trusted decision-making and planning within complex operating and data environments. With applications for the Royal Navy and more broadly across defence, we are very excited to see what these Phase 2 projects might bring.”

Dave Gawthorpe, UK & Australia Vice President of Secure Platform Systems, said: “We are excited to be part of this cutting edge project that explores how AI can be incorporated into military decision-making. This builds on our strength in integrating complex systems with advanced AI based applications to ensure the right information, in the right format, is delivered to those who need it. This is becoming ever more important as the volume of information available grows and becomes more complex.”
