The £10.7 million contract to build the Defence Infrastructure Organisation’s (DIO) new headquarters building has been awarded to Kier.

The new DIO building will be based on the site at Defence Medical Services (DMS) Whittington in Lichfield, Staffordshire.

DIO plays a vital role in supporting the UK’s Armed Forces by building, maintaining and servicing the infrastructure needed to support defence and is responsible for enabling defence people to live, work, train and deploy at home and overseas.

The new headquarters will include an atrium which will provide an informal meeting space for employees. It will be constructed using a modular method with modules being constructed off site and transported to the building site for installation.

This year, Defence Procurement, Research, Technology & Exportability (DPRTE) 2020 will feature for the first time an Infrastructure and Estates Pavilion fully supported by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO). This unique link-up between DPRTE and DIO will allow both buyers and suppliers to connect with key DIO personnel and gain an insight into the latest initiatives, developments and opportunities within defence infrastructure.

In addition, the DIO Knowledge Transfer Zone will host a range of topical educational and interactive sessions designed specifically to enhance your knowledge and ability to contribute to the future direction and delivery of the ongoing defence infrastructure and estates procurement programme.

DIO will vacate their current site in Sutton Coldfield by Spring 2021, allowing staff to move to a purpose-built building on an existing, local military site demonstrating DIO’s commitment to reducing the size of the Defence estate.

Demolition works have taken place at DMS Whittington to clear the site ready for construction. Works are expected to start in Spring 2020.

With an annual spend of around £3 billion on construction and infrastructure services on behalf of its customers, DIO represents a significant opportunity for both current and potential suppliers.

Through its direct support of the DPRTE 2020 Infrastructure & Estates Zone, DIO hopes to realise its ambition to tap into the supply chain and help to deliver improved outcomes and value for its customers and users of the defence estate.

DPRTE 2020 takes place on 3 September at Farnborough International Exhibition & Conference Centre.
