The US Air Force has started a new justice information system to modernise criminal data.

The Air Force Justice Information System was created to provide an integrated global database tracking criminal activity that could affect the Air Force and its personnel. The system was developed in less than ten months to provide a modern information reporting system.

The $5.7million system will use workflows, hierarchies, and roles and feature a global blotter module. It was developed through collaboration with the US Navy, US Army, and the Air Force Office of Special Investigations.

AFJIS Project Leader Lieutenant Colonel Sandra Thompson said: “Deployment of the system will occur in phases and will go live for all Air Force security forces units – including Reserve and National Guard – by October 31.”

“The rapid launch of this system is unprecedented in the world of IT as the system was developed, tested and deployed in less than a year. Over the next week, (Hanscom Air Force Base, Patrick AFB and Joint Base Andrews) subject matter experts will operationally test case management and global blotter modules, providing direct feedback to the AFJIS team and vendor.”

“AFJIS and the recently stood up Air Force Criminal Justice Information Cell provide a solution for the Air Force’s long-term crimin11al data reporting requirements. The total force team will continue to develop and improve the system to include additional capabilities that further enhance the capabilities in our defender toolkit.”

Thompson, with help from Maj. Tom Lowe, Capt. Jon Wallace and a total force and contractor team created the new system to replace the Security Forces Management Information System which has been in use since the 90s. The AFJIS will automatically flag federal reporting of offences, provide criminal data reporting trends, as well as predictive analytics.
