RAF Lossiemouth is undergoing extensive upgrade work which will also include runway resurfacing thanks to a new DIO contract.

Construction work at RAF Lossiemouth will be expanded to include runway resurfacing thanks to a new £75million contract with VolkerFitzpatrick. The resurfaced runway will prepare for the arrival of nine new P8-A Poseidon Maritime Patrol Aircraft in 2020.

RAF Lossiemouth is currently home to four Typhoon jets and will have to adapt its runway for use by larger aircraft. Other work at the base ahead of the arrival includes a new accommodation block, upgraded drainage systems, a new Air Traffic Control Tower, and upgraded facilities for IX Squadron following their arrival at the base earlier in the year.

Director of the Lossiemouth Development Project Group Captain Simon Strasdin said: “Resurfacing our airfield operating surfaces represents the next stage towards operating the fleet of P-8A Poseidon from RAF Lossiemouth, and I am glad to welcome VolkerFitzpatrick Ltd onto the team which will help to deliver it.”

“The Lossiemouth Development Programme is a complex series of projects which is set to transform RAF Lossiemouth into a modern, high-tech Station, equipped to face a range of evolving challenges. It represents an infrastructure investment of over £400m in Moray, the creation of around 550 additional military posts, and employment opportunities for many local contractors.”

Resurfacing work is expected to be completed in 2021 and aircraft and crews will continue to operate while construction work is being undertaken. While the runway intersection is being completed there will be a period of relocation for aircraft before it becomes operational again.
