The USS Porter has begun travelling to the Black Sea for a NATO operation to support allies in the area.

The Arleigh Burke-class USS Porter travelled to the Black Sea as part of a NATO operation to create stability in the region. The deployment is the sixth time this year that a US ship has been sent to the area.

Most recently the USS Carney went to the Black Sea to participate in Sea Breeze, an exercise hosted by the US and Ukraine that brought together 19 different countries. The operation took place in July and was the 19th iteration so far.

Commander of the 6th Fleet Vice Admiral Lisa M. Franchetti said: “The naval operations we conduct in the Black Sea with our allies and partners maintain the strong relationships that are necessary for regional stability.”

“The inherent flexibility of our forward-deployed naval force DDGs enables our ability to provide a credible defense and ensure we are postured appropriately to support our global operations.”

Porter, forward-deployed at Naval Station Rota, Spain, is conducting naval operations in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations in support of U.S. national security interests in Europe. The U.S. Navy routinely operates in the Black Sea consistent with international law, as well as with the Montreux Convention.

The US Navy 6th fleet is headquartered in Naples, Italy. It performs a scope of naval operations to secure US interests and promote stability in the region as well as partnering with allied and interagency partners in Europe and Africa to conduct joint operations.
