The United States Department of Defense has released the 2019 Global Health Security Strategy to tackle diseases internationally.

The Global Health Security Strategy outlines the US approach to detecting, preventing, and responding to disease outbreaks. The Department of Defense will team up with the National Security Strategy and the National Biodefense Strategy on ‘Advancing the Global Health Agenda to Achieve a World Safe and Secure from Infectious Disease Threats.’

The strategy guides the federal government in protecting the United States and its partners abroad from infectious disease threats by working with other nations, international organisations, and nongovernmental stakeholders. These recommendations include strengthened global health capacities with allied countries, increased international support for global health security, and a resilient homeland prepared against global health threats.

Lt. Col. Clara Gleason, a defence spokesperson, said: “The Department of Defense is pleased to be a part of the U.S. government’s strong commitment to global health security and the global health security agenda.”

The DoD has highlighted the importance of the issue, saying that disease can rapidly spread through international travel to jeopardise the health, security, and prosperity of the United States. They have outlined the issue as vital to the national security interest of the United States to strengthen global health security and manage the risk of infectious disease threats.
