BAE systems have awarded an IT contract for submarines in its Barrow-in-Furness base to previous collaborator Capgemini.

BAE systems confirmed the five year IT contract for systems aboard its UK submarines. Operations will be conducted from Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, BAE system’s IT base in the UK.

Capgemini has previously won contracts with Statoil, the Rugby World Cup 7 Tournament, and McDonalds. Their work for BAE will include service orchestration, networking, hosting, end-user computing, DevOps, reporting and analytics, automation, and a digital service desk.

Stephen Cole, CIO at BAE Systems Submarines, said: “As we embarked on this critical program for our Submarines business that will deliver improved agile digital services, world-class service transformation and orchestration capabilities underpinned by very strong references were essential in our selection process.”

“We are confident that Capgemini met these requirements and is the right partner for us. The team really understands where we are trying to get to as a business and its collaborative approach alongside its commitment to developing skills in the local area were paramount to our decision.”

It is hoped that the new contract will reduce running costs for the systems. Capgemini is expected to develop programs with fast responses and systems that are compatible with a mobile workforce.

Capgemini has worked with BAE systems for the past four years. The new contract will see them take over the majority of IT work at the Barrow base, with BAE hoping to introduce new technologies, reduce cost, and increase service availability.
