QinetiQ is working with the Australian War Memorial to revitalise the country’s most significant aviation assets, including the Hudson Mark IV Bomber currently on display at Canberra Airport.
During a two-year sponsorship of the Australian War Memorial, QinetiQ will help restore the Hudson’s damaged nose cone. The restoration, which includes the engineering design and manufacture of an entirely new nose cone, will see the bomber returned to pristine condition.
The Hudson was one of the most versatile aircraft to be used by allied forces in the early days of the Second World War. It first saw action in the Pacific when the Japanese attacked Malaya before the infamous raid on Pearl Harbour.
According to Dr Brendan Nelson, Director of the Australian War Memorial, the partnership will enable more opportunities to tell similar stories of Australia’s distinguished military past.
“Currently, the Australian War Memorial has the gallery space to display only four percent of the objects it has in the National Collection,” said Dr Nelson. “The support of QinetiQ allows us to showcase the Hudson bomber to the public and tell the story of the courageous young men who flew it during the dark days of the Second World War defending our nation’s freedoms and vital interests.”
For QinetiQ, the partnership marks the continuation of the company’s efforts to bring Australia’s rich aviation history to life, with work currently underway on a number of the memorial’s large technology objects.
