Defence and security specialist Saab plans to demonstrate its anti-submarine warfare training system – the AUV62-AT – to the US Navy, it has been announced.

During the demonstration, the US Navy will evaluate the AUV62-AT – an artificial acoustic system designed to mimic a submarine – to see how it stacks up against the Navy’s own systems, as part of the Foreign Comparative Testing Programme.

To date, the demonstration is planned for summer 2018 with the option of further testing in distant 2019.

This is all part of a wider exploration on behalf of the US Navy to replace its existing anti-submarine warfare system for the Undersea Warfare Training Range.

“With submarine usage on the rise, anti-submarine warfare training is more crucial than ever,” said Görgen Johansson, Senior Vice President and Head of Saab’s Business Area Dynamics.

“Some of today’s submarines are armed with heavyweight torpedoes that can destroy a massive vessel rather than simply disable it. AUV62-AT prepares operators for this threat.”

The AUV62-AT package schools operators in submarine surveillance, detection, identification, classification and target engagement.

It replaces the use of a submarine in the role of a maneuvering training target and can be launched from ship, submarine or shore. The system is currently in service with a number of countries worldwide.
