India’s Defence Ministry has issued a Request for Information for over 200 helicopters for the Indian Navy under the new Strategic Partnership model.

The global tender estimated to worth over $5 billion consists of 111 naval utility helicopters and 123 naval multi role helicopters, with anti-submarine capabilities.

The strategic partnership model seeks to create a partnership between global defence manufacturers and Indian companies to enable a transfer of technology and knowledge, which will facilitate the growth of India’s own defence manufacturing industry.

The news follows the Defence Acquisition Council’s approval of a deal with Boeing for the purchase of six Apache helicopters in a move that is envisaged will modernise its offensive capabilities.

The Indian Navy has been reported to be facing a shortfall of helicopters with the multi role helicopters envisaged filling the void on its warships.

The new utility helicopters will supersede India’s ageing fleet of Chetak helicopters.

The deadline to respond to the Request for Information is October 6 2017.
