Lockheed Martin has delivered its first Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) to the U.S. Army from a brand new production facility in Camden, Arkansas.

The global security and aerospace specialist has been contracted to manufacture 124 new ATACMS missiles for both the U.S. Army and an undisclosed international client. The ATACMS program is now in full swing at Lockheed Martin’s ‘Precision Fires Production Centre of Excellence’ in Camden.

With the production effort ongoing, Lockheed Martin is nearing completion of a separate development contract, again with the U.S. Army, which will markedly enhance the existing ATACMS missile. Modifications include an upgrade to the missiles electronics and the qualification of a height-of-burst proximity sensor which will increase area of effect.

“ATACMS has demonstrated unparalleled system performance and reliability for our customers,” said Scott Greene, Vice President of Precision Fires at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. “These latest ATACMS rounds will support army readiness, and provide a critical new precision engagement capability to our international customers.”

For the uninitiated, ATACMS is the U.S. Army’s only tactical long-range, deep precision-strike, surface-to-surface weapon system. ATACMS missiles can be fired from any Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS), affording battlefield commanders the capability to operate in contested environments.

Lockheed Martin has produced an approximate 3,800 ATACMS missiles, with more than 600 fired in combat to date.
