NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has reassured the Ukraine of its continuing political and practical support as he met with President Poroshenko in Kiev this week.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko, Mr. Stoltenberg highlighted NATO’s practical and political support for Ukraine as the two men marked twenty years of NATO’s Distinctive Partnership with Ukraine.

Mr Stoltenberg said: “NATO provides strong practical and political support for Ukraine but at the same time Ukraine provides support to NATO and we are very grateful for the fact that Ukraine contributes to all NATO missions and operations from Afghanistan, Kosovo, Mediterranean and also helped piracy off the Horn of Africa.”

He described the partnership between NATO and Ukraine as a “strong mutual partnership” and vowed to continue the alliance’s support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Secretary General said that NATO had reviewed its Comprehensive Assistance Package for Ukraine and had pledged almost €40M to support Ukraine through ten different trust funds.

Areas to receive funding include command and control, cyber defence and medical rehabilitation.

He said: “We are now working to provide Ukraine with satellite communications equipment. In recent days, we have delivered state of the art cyber defence equipment, helping key government institutions, to better investigate cyber security incidents and to protect themselves from cyber-attacks, such as those we saw recently.”
