The rotation of NATO’s Baltic Air Policing has switched, with Poland now taking the lead, with support from Spain.

Following on from the Royal Netherlands Air Force, Poland’s rotation will see it carrying out missions across the area from the airbase at Šiauliai, Lithuania. While the German Air Force’s supporting mission will be overtaken by Spain, based at Estonia’s Ämari airbase.

The two countries are regular contributors to NATO defence missions, with Poland having led the air policing six times so far. 44 rotations have been undertaken by NATO allies, with 17 countries taking part in the mission to ensure the integrity of the airspace over Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania

Four F-16 fighter aircraft will be deployed by the Polish Air Force, with Spain supporting through five F-18 fighter jets. The next rotation is scheduled for September.
