The MOD has signed a three-year extension contract with defence and security company, Saab, to provide support and services to the Direct Fire Weapon Effects Simulator (DFWES) capability.

The DFWES simulator provides superior realistic and challenging training, with both dismounted and mounted troops able simulate the effects of direct and indirect fire from all weapon systems and vehicles, from small arms through to Main Battle Tanks. Training data from the system can be gathered and assessed, and training improved.

As the UK’s only standalone, depolyable capability, it supports the British Army, Royal Air Force and Royal Marine training events around the world.

With an interoperability function, the system is being increasingly used for training throughout the forces, and this sees the provision of a flexible support to the UK’s Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) and the Infantry Battle School (IBS), as well as at the UK’s Collective Training Environments in Canada and at Salisbury Plain.

“This new contract, extending the use of the capability, is a proof of the strong relationship between Saab and the British Army, and a renewal of our commitment as a highly trusted complete training provider to a leading military customer,” says Åsa Thegström, head of business unit Training & Simulation within Saab business area Dynamics.
