Following on from a record-breaking year in 2016, the UK Aerospace industry is confident of another successful year in 2017.

ADS, the Premier Trade Organisation for companies in the UK Aerospace, Defence, Security and Space Sectors, has forecast another rise in production rates for 2017. The industry is predicted to deliver some 1,528 aircraft this year, with January boasting the highest ever engine orders, with the order books topping 23,000 for the first time. There was a major order for single aisle engines, which added 624 more to the order book, with manufacturers needing to deliver 23,392 engines.

Production backlog now stands at 13,564 for commercial aircraft, which is worth some £225Bn to the UK industry.

A solid start to 2017 has seen 69 aircraft coming off the production line, representing some £1.4bn of value to the UK economy. While this may be seen in stark contrast to December, when 181 new aircraft were delivered, it is more realistic in terms of delivery rate, and stands up well to the record-breaking 2016.

Paul Everitt, Chief Executive of ADS Group, commented: “January’s figures show a confident start to the year for the aerospace industry. 2017 is set to be a defining year for UK industry as it asserts its strengths in tough international markets against the challenge of Brexit.

“Through the launch of its industrial strategy Green Paper, the government has reaffirmed long-term commitment to work with the aerospace industry – through the Aerospace Growth Partnership – in support of R&D and supply chain competitiveness. This approach is encouraging world-leading companies to invest in new facilities, technology and skills, and positioning the UK to win work on future aircraft programmes.”
