New state-of-the-art security screening equipment has been installed at RAF Brize Norton.

The base is the first Unit to receive the new technology in its airport terminal that has upgraded the standard equipment that we are all familiar with from trips abroad.

A new dual-view x-ray scanner has been installed that gives much clearer views of hand luggage to operators than from the previous technology. While a new enhanced walk-through multi-zone metal detector provides greater detection and higher discrimination of non-threat items, resulting in less false alarms.

While passengers will now also be checked by a millimetre wave body scanner and explosives & narcotics trace detection system, and operators will have the benefit of a fully deployable system, to allow screening capability on contingency operations.

Supported by a dynamic maintenance contract, disruption to passengers should be limited.

The new system will create a much more effective screening process, allowing prohibited articles and dangerous goods to be detected in both hold and hand baggage, thus improving Air Safety. Although passengers are reminded that security is the responsibility of everyone and to check all hold and hand baggage before travelling on RAF Air Transport.

Flight Lieutenant Morter, Officer Commanding Police & Security Flight said: “Whilst the delivery of this new capability ensures compliance, it furthermore protects our personnel and aircraft against current and emerging threats. It is for this reason that I am delighted to see the new security screening equipment installed and in effect at RAF Brize Norton.”
