The hubs, to be based in the Gulf, Asia Pacific and West Africa, will help the UK provide greater focus to these regions, and by working with their international partners to reinforce bilateral and multilateral defence partnerships, will help protect and advance the UK’s interests.
Based in Dubai, Singapore and Abuja, the British Defence Staffs follow the commitment made in the SSDR last year as well as reinforcing the relationships already established with these companies.
Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon said: “Setting up new British Defence Staffs will broaden our global reach, support regional stability and security, and ensure greater cooperation with our partners.
“Backed by a rising Defence budget, this shows Britain is stepping up across the world to keep us safe at home.”
Britain already has a significant permanent presence in the Gulf, and the Prime Minister’s recent visit to the area and meeting with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) seeks to build on this.
The hubs in Asia Pacific will reaffirm UK Defence engagement, training and exercising with partner nations, while in West Africa, the focus will be on training for terror attacks and international terror threats.
The BDS will support the continued expansion of the UK Defence Attachés team. With over 120 DAs in 80 countries worldwide, this year has seen new posts in Finland, Senegal (also covering the Sahel region) and Albania, as well as new Deputy DA roles in Qatar, Afghanistan, Latvia, Lithuania and Georgia.
The expansion of the network shows the UK’s international aspirations and its commitment to strengthening Defence relationships, as set out in the SDSR.
