AWE plays a crucial role in national defence by providing and maintaining warheads for Trident, the UK’s nuclear deterrent. The organisation is contracted to the Ministry of Defence through a Government Owned, Contractor Operated (GOCO) arrangement.
The National Apprenticeship Awards challenge top apprenticeship employers and apprentices across England to show how apprenticeships have made a real difference to their organisation and careers. AWE, along with the other regional winners, will now go forward to the final of the awards in January 2017.
Kathryn Marshall, AWE’s Director of Human Resources, said: “We are proud and delighted to have won this award and to have national recognition of AWE’s longstanding commitment to excellence in its apprenticeship programme. We have been nurturing and developing young people for nearly 65 years, since our Skills Academy opened its doors. More than 4000 men and women have completed their apprenticeships with us and many have worked their way up through the company into senior leadership roles.
“With the Government investing £2.5 billion in apprenticeship training, it is clear that developing the nation’s future talent is a high priority and AWE has never been more committed to providing opportunities for young people and supporting them to achieve their potential.”
