Leonardo-Finmeccanica’s German subsidiary Selex ES has been awarded a contract from Public Works and Government Services Canada to supply Environment and Climate Change Canada with a weather radar systems network.

The contract requires supply, delivery and installation of 20 weather radar systems with associated infrastructure, with options for up to an additional 13 radars, including services such as documentation as well as related training and project management.

Leonardo products offer the best-inclass C-, S- and X-Band weather radar systems available today on the market. These systems cover a wide spectrum of applications for different users such as air traffic control authorities, hydrological institutions, agricultural and forestry institutions, meteorological institutes and research agencies.

Canada is a strategic market for Leonardo. At the beginning of the year, it signed a major contract to replace the legacy Air Traffic Control (ATC) radars at 12 major Canadian airports including Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Vancouver and Calgary.

Moreover, a series of key opportunities are on track including the Fixed Wing Search and Rescue (FWSAR) SAR aircraft programme for which Leonardo will propose the C-27J fixed wing tactical airlift aircraft; the Canadian Surface Combatant programme for 15 new ships and related combat systems; naval communication systems for vessels and submarines; and retrofit of the CH 149 Cormorant SAR helicopters.
